June 24, 2010 - Council last night approved one of the largest urban boundary expansions in the city's history. Council voted 12-4 to designate the land around the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport as a future site for industrial growth. The 1,200-hectares is presently zoned agricultural. Voting for the boundary expansion were Mayor Larry Di Ianni and councillors Phil Bruckler, Chad Collins, Murray Ferguson, Tom Jackson, Bill Kelly, Sam Merulla, Bernie Morelli, Dave Mitchell, Maria Pearson, Art Samson and Terry Whitehead.

June 24, 2010 - Hamilton has big plans for its growing airport. But growth at the airport can't take off until the basics are in place. A provincial highway -- New Highway 6 -- off Highway 403 to the west won't be done until next year. Sewer, hydro, water and other services must go in. Like many other parts of the city's economic future, the airport area is an emerging -- not a present-day -- cluster.

June 23, 2010 - Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger managed to convince city council tonight not to delay a decision on aerotropolis until 2011. Instead, the decision will be made in late September. And there will be three public meetings over the summer as opposed to just one.

May 27-June 2, 2010 - Interventions by two citizen groups last week helped convince the planning committee to defer a decision on rezoning rural agricultural land for another airport parking lot. Opponents argued the “temporary use bylaw” would permanently render the land unfit for food production, and that the rezoning is an “end–run” around the aerotropolis public process ordered by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).

April 8-14, 2010 - Both provincial and city officials are being slammed over the so–called aerotropolis reserve. City staff want to label about 1400 acres of rural land for future employment uses, a clause that the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing wants removed from the official plan to avoid speculation on the food production area. Bob Bratina suggested staff have “almost been intransigent” in more than three years of battles with the province over the size of the proposed airport employment growth district, despite public opposition to using agricultural lands for industrial purposes.

April 26, 2010 - Hamilton's plan to develop lands around the airport into an aerotropolis will be the subject of a public forum tonight. The discussion will be moderated by former CBC Radio host Jeff Goodes, who lives in Dundas. The forum will cover issues related to employment growth lands around Hamilton International Airport. Panellists will include airport officials, city councillors, farmers and developers.
The event, hosted by the Hamilton Civic League, begins at Westdale Secondary School at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
