The Airport Employment Growth District (AEGD) is a proposed development site of approximately 830 hectares surrounding the Hamilton International Airport. The city has identified the AEGD as one of the main areas to address the city's need for employment lands. Many studies and ongoing consultations have indicated that developing this area will provide several significant benefits to Hamilton, ON, including:
- Generate 20,000 – 30,000 new jobs
- Contribute significant additional revenue to Hamilton
- Provide critical support for Hamilton's infrastructure

Ongoing studies support AEGD
Several studies have been commissioned to ensure the AEGD provides economic benefits and employment to Hamilton while ensuring environmental sustainability. Here are some highlights from those studies.
- The Growth Related Integrated Development Strategy (GRIDS) has identified the AEGD as one of the main areas to address the city's need for employment lands.
- Hamilton currently has an an unemployment rate of 8.7% (Source:Statistics Canada August 2009). Meanwhile, the population of Hamilton is expected to increase by 162,000 by 2031.
New jobs must be created to fill this void. The AEGD is one of the ways that goal can be accomplished.
- The development of the AEGD, along with the brownfields and other employment opportunities that exist in Hamilton, will go a long way to reducing Hamilton's unemployment over the long term.
- The types of new businesses in the AEGD would be different from those attracted to the city core, so they would not negatively impact growth in Hamilton's downtown.
